Well, this is where it all starts…..
A friend of mine, Danny, years ago now, said I should watch ‘The Wire’. He had heard that it got great reviews & was well worth watching.
I do generally trust his views on TV, so went about purchasing The Wire – Season 1. http://besttvonline.net/home-page-of-best-tv-online/the-wire-season-1/
It wasn’t plain sailing I’ll be honest & he did tell me that I would just need to trust him & plough through 3 or 4 episodes without giving up. He was right, quite a few times I did think about dumping it & looking into watching something else. Why?
The drug corner scenes (of which there are many) are just drug dealers talking ‘street’ & for someone who likes to listen to all the words that are spoken this is HARD to follow….in fact it is so slang that it is almost impossible.
BUT…..the one piece of advice I would give, is do not get bogged down with trying to understand everything, just go with the flow & you will work out what is going on & that is all you need to do…..just get the general idea.
Then comes the magic moment somewhere between episode 2 & 4 for most people…..& it just clicks! And that my friends, is when it gets you.
You are in.
From there on in, you will be hooked.
The story is so well written & the characters are so deep & engaging. The lead character – Jimmy McNulty is just superb & written with the ‘Warts & All’ approach, the same as all the characters…..nobody is a saint in this programme. Another reason why it’s so real.
Knowing that there were only 5 seasons & that it had finished meant I treated it differently. I enjoyed Season 1 & then gave myself a rest & watched other shows. I did this with all seasons until I was on the last episode of Season 5 & I did wait 2 or 3 days before I watched it.
It was gutting that this was it.
It had finished. Never to return.
It was quite depressing really, I do remember feeling gutted at the time, but as they say…..all good things come to an end.
……& what the heck! you can watch them again & again….& guess what, like wine, it gets better with age & it gives more & more, the more you understand it.
If you are thinking of watching….don’t think….Do! Just get past the first 4 episodes & that will be it.
